Gravel driveway depth

Many residential gravel driveways use about 4 inches of compacted gravel for planning, but the right depth depends on whether the project is a light refresh, a standard new driveway, or a heavier build over soft soil.

Typical depth ranges

A refresh on an existing driveway may only need around 3 inches of new aggregate in some cases. A more standard new install often lands around 4 to 5 inches compacted. Heavier builds, poor drainage, or softer subgrade can push the required system depth higher once base and top layers are considered together.

Why depth matters so much

Driveway depth directly changes the cubic yards and tons you need to order, so even a 1-inch change can move the budget noticeably. It also affects stability. A driveway that looks cheaper because it uses less stone can become more expensive later if it ruts quickly.

Planning tip

Use the same length and width in the calculator, then compare 3-inch, 4-inch, and 5-inch depths. That gives you a quick view of the tradeoff between upfront budget and a more durable gravel layer.
