How much gravel do I need for a driveway?
Measure the driveway length and width, multiply them to get square footage, then apply the compacted gravel depth. Most residential driveway estimates convert that volume into cubic yards first and then into tons for ordering.

Simple method
For a quick estimate, calculate square feet and multiply by depth in feet. Divide by 27 to convert cubic feet into cubic yards. Suppliers often quote by ton, so you then multiply cubic yards by the gravel density used for your chosen material.
Driveway gravel formula
Use this basic formula for a planning estimate:
Length x width x depth in feet = cubic feet. Cubic feet / 27 = cubic yards.
For example, a 50-foot by 12-foot driveway is 600 square feet. A 4-inch compacted layer is 0.333 feet deep, so the volume is about 200 cubic feet. Divide by 27 and the project needs about 7.4 cubic yards before rounding or waste allowance.

Why the tons number changes
Crusher run, pea gravel, and limestone are not identical in density. That is why two driveways with the same dimensions can end up needing slightly different tonnage. Compaction also matters because loose-spread gravel is thicker than compacted gravel.
Many planning estimates use roughly 1.3 to 1.5 tons per cubic yard for common driveway gravel, but the exact conversion depends on the aggregate and moisture. Ask the supplier which ton-per-yard assumption they use before ordering.
How much extra gravel should you allow?
For a clean rectangular driveway, a small rounding allowance is usually enough. For irregular shapes, uneven subgrade, ruts, or areas that need feathering into an existing surface, allow more room in the estimate. It is better to confirm with the supplier or contractor than to under-order and pay a second delivery fee.
