How much gravel do I need for a driveway?

Measure the driveway length and width, multiply them to get square footage, then apply the compacted gravel depth. Most residential driveway estimates convert that volume into cubic yards first and then into tons for ordering.

Simple method

For a quick estimate, calculate square feet and multiply by depth in feet. Divide by 27 to convert cubic feet into cubic yards. Suppliers often quote by ton, so you then multiply cubic yards by the gravel density used for your chosen material.

Why the tons number changes

Crusher run, pea gravel, and limestone are not identical in density. That is why two driveways with the same dimensions can end up needing slightly different tonnage. Compaction also matters because loose-spread gravel is thicker than compacted gravel.

Planning example
